If there’s one word that sums up the New Forest for 2017 it’s action! Running, playing walking, festivalising and celebrating…it’s all on the menu.
From Spring 2017 there’ll be plenty of action from delighted youngsters rushing around exploring the new Holbury Manor Park and Warren Copse wild play site, situated just outside Holbury. The site’s construction is partly in response to the finding that the number of children playing in wild spaces has more than halved in a generation, with only 10 per cent playing in natural spaces such as woodlands and heath. Families will be able to enjoy den building, balancing on logs and other fun, forest pursuits.
There will be more family fun during July 25, 26 and 27, when the 2017 New Forest Show takes place, and food-lovers everywhere will be delighted to learn that the New Forest Food Festival will return in the autumn, following the inaugural event in 2016. A new Seafood Festival is planned in Lymington for August too – watch this space.
The popular Smoked & Uncut boutique festivals will be making a return to The Pig and Lime Wood hotels during the summer.
Active types can enjoy the New Forest Marathon on Sunday September 10 and the New Forest Walking Festival from October 14-29.
The New Forest Arts Festival takes place from June 10 to 25, with art taking place in a range of unusual spaces (this year’s locations included a tree house, castle, beach hut and pub!) throughout the forest and its villages.
Many of the hotels, restaurants and attractions that make the New Forest such a fun place to visit are planning lots of new things for 2017, too.
Luxury country house hotel, Chewton Glen, is set to open The Kitchen in March 2017 – a new purpose-built cookery school – within its grounds. Classes will be hosted by Chef Tutor Rob Cottam, and visiting guest chefs, including James Martin (a former Chewton Glen chef) and some very special friends drawn from his little black book of contacts! The Kitchen will also feature a 40-seater informal restaurant, with an open-plan kitchen with pizza oven, chef’s table for private dining and celebrations and an informal lounge with an outside seating area and private parking.
New restaurant, Bruno’s, will be opening its doors in Brockenhurst, adding to its reputation as Hampshire’s foodiest village. Chef will be serving classics such as mussels, surf & turf and pan-roasted bass.
Clean eating is on the menu at Careys Manor Hotel in Brockenurst, who have teamed up with Spring Green London to provide breakfast and all-day menus. The philosophy to use the power of fresh multitasking foods, innovative ingredients from around the world, all with a plant-based focus is the perfect addition to this multi award-winning spa hotel.
Holidaymakers will be greeted with several new overnight options including a new pink ‘Splittie’ campervan joining the fleet at New Forest Safari Campers and a new bedroom at Cottage Lodge Hotel where the furniture is made from trees cut down in the garden.
We’ll be celebrating anniversaries of the first passenger Hovercraft – it’s 55 years since Hythe’s Sir Christopher Cockerell watched his Hovercraft start its passenger service – and 90 years since Sir Malcolm Campbell, (whose iconic Bluebird racing car now lives at Beaulieu Motor Museum) made his world land speed attempt at Pendine Sands.
And finally, visitors to Beaulieu Motor Museum have a whole raft of vehicle-themed events to enjoy, from a two-day Supercar Weekend, and Europe’s largest Autojumble in early September.
