Mother’s Day in the New Forest

Mother’s Day in the New Forest

No one loves you like your mum. So it’s time to show her how much you love her – by treating her to a fantastic day out in one of the UK’s most beautiful destinations.

The New Forest has more than 200 hotels, pubs, restaurants, B&B’s, holiday parks, shops and activities centres just waiting to make Mother’s Day special. And at less than a minute from the M27 motorway, or 89 minutes by train from London, it’s easy to get there and back for a day.

Native forests, huge skies, moors and coastline combine in an area which spans 193,000 acres so there’s plenty to get out and see. With more than 143 miles of track, there are more than enough places to explore on foot. Start off with the way-marked walks at Bolderwood, Blackwood, Knightwood Oak and Wilverly Plain, or marvel at the giant Redwood trees on Rhinefield’s Ornamental Drive.

After you’ve seen the great outdoors do lunch – or afternoon tea.

Balmer Lawn Hotel, Bartley Lodge, Beaulieu Hotel, Moorhill House Hotel, Woodlands Lodge Hotel, The Bell Inn, and the Michelin-starred Montagu Arms all offer special Mother’s Day lunches or afternoon tea. Or take tea by the sea at Elmers Court Hotel or Christchurch Harbour, with fabulous views of the Solent. If tea and cake are not her thing, try afternoon tapas at Burley Manor, where dishes include sardines in sherry, or lime drizzled prawns.

All mums love to be spoiled so book her into a luxury spa. Let her bliss out with authentic Thai massages, tropical rain showers and delicate foods during SenSpa’s Mother’s Day Escape package at Carey’s Manor in Brockenhurst.

For ultra-luxe try a spa day at 5* Chewton Glen near New Milton, which is doing a special Mother’s Day tea with fizz. For a funkier feel book mum into the Herb House spa at Lime Wood, or the rustic treatment rooms at The Pig at Brockenhurst, which offers its signature treatment at £145 for 120 minutes. Or treat her to a spa package from Saltus Spa at the Balmer Lawn Hotel, or at the Rhinefield House Hotel.

If your mum’s not the sort to spa don’t worry – the New Forest has that covered, too!

Take to the saddle – on bikes or by joining a pony trek – either way she’ll see nature up close and personal including some of the 3,000 wild ponies which help to make the area so special.

Burley Villa School of Riding at New Milton offers year-round day or stay packages, for beginners or experienced horsewomen. For mums who prefer two wheels there’s New Forest Cycle Experience at Brockenhurst or Forest Leisure Cycling in Burley – both offer the chance to get out across the countryside on a bicycle, from £17 for a standard bike and £25 per day for an electric version. Helmets and a mobile back-up service is provided.

Daredevil mums should be treated to a trip to Go Ape at Moors Valley Country Park, where they can take to the skies on the zip-wire adventure of a lifetime. Or launch into the forest’s waters by canoeing or kayaking with New Forest Activities, which also offers archery and a Family Rope Course.
