Father’s Day in The New Forest

No one loves you like your dad. So it’s time to show him how much you love him – by treating him to a fantastic day out in one of the UK’s most beautiful destinations.

The New Forest has more than 200 hotels, pubs, restaurants, B&B’s, holiday parks, shops and activities centres just waiting to make Father’s Day special. And at less than a minute from the M27 motorway, or 89 minutes by train from London, it’s easy to get there and back, even for just a day.

Native forests, huge skies, moors and coastline combine in an area which spans 193,000 acres so there’s plenty to get out and see. With more than 143 miles of track, there are more than enough places to explore on foot and for free! Start off with the way-marked walks at Bolderwood, Blackwood, Knightwood Oak and Wilverly Plain, or marvel at the giant Redwood trees on Rhinefield’s Ornamental Drive.

If your Dad’s the adventurous sort, treat him to a day he’ll remember. Archery, canoeing, kayaking and cycle hire; book an activity taking place on Father’s Day, Sunday 19th June and get Dad’s place half price* with New Forest Activities. Choose from canoeing or kayaking tours, family canoeing, archery or Battlefield Live.

If he particularly enjoys the water (and getting wet!), let him race you on the Total Wipeout-style Aqua Park at the New Forest Water Park.

For Dads who prefer two wheels, there’s Forest Leisure Cycling in Burley or Cyclexperience in Brockenhurst – both offer the chance to get out across the countryside on a bicycle, from £17 for a standard bike and £25 per day for an electric version. Helmets and a mobile back-up service is provided.

Daredevil Dads should be treated to a trip to Go Ape at Moors Valley Country Park, where they can take to the skies on the zip-wire adventure of a lifetime. Or join a kayaking or stand-up paddleboard tour down the Keyhaven River to historic Hurst Castle, with The New Forest Paddle Sport Company.

Petrolhead Dads will adore a trip to Beaulieu National Motor Museum to check out its world-class car collection, or, if motorbikes are his thing, a day at the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum will delight.

Take him on the miniature steam-train to view the magnificent gardens at Exbury Gardens or for a thrill-seeking ride on the rollercoasters at Paultons Park (where the new Lost Kingdom attraction will give him a Jurrasic Park-style experience).

And if Dad wants to spend some quality time with little ones, how about a family trip to Longdown Activity Farm in Ashurst, where you can all pretend to be a farmer for a day and if you are lucky, enjoy a tractor ride too.

After you’ve seen the great outdoors do lunch – or afternoon tea.
Balmer Lawn Hotel, Bartley Lodge, Beaulieu Hotel, Moorhill House Hotel, Woodlands Lodge Hotel, The Bell Inn, and the Michelin-starred Montagu Arms all offer spectacular afternoon teas. Or take tea by the sea at Elmers Court Hotel or The Christchurch Harbour, with fabulous views of the Solent. If tea and cake are not Dad’s thing, try afternoon tapas at Burley Manor, where dishes include sardines in sherry, or lime drizzled prawns.
